Facts About our School
![]()
Douglas Elementary was actually built in 1902. It was a six-room building located on the corner of East Valentine and the North Dixie Highway. It only cost $6,000 to build (of course that was during a time when you could buy a loaf of bread for a nickel.)
The current Douglas facility was built in 1937 at 1525 North Carlyle. It only had 12 classrooms. Since then, many classrooms, portable buildings and a spacious gym have been added to make it big enough to hold 650 students.
Douglas was named for a Major in the Civil War, James P. Douglas. He settled down in Tyler after serving as a commander in South Carolina during the war. Once in Tyler he was a lawyer and a member of the Texas State Senate. He was also famous for being one of the organizers of the Cotton Belt Railroad and owning Tyler's first fruit canning company.
