History of Birdwell Elementary
Birdwell Elementary
opened its doors on September 13, 1948, and was the first school
built in Tyler to accommodate the expected influx of students who
would be known as “baby boomers”. The school was named for A. W.
Birdwell, a former superintendent of Smith County Schools and
principal of Tyler High School, who became President of Stephen F.
Austin College.
In 1998, John Muse and
former students donated $1,000,000+ to fund a new state-of-the-art
wing featuring fourteen classrooms, labs for art, music, science and
computers. The W. S. Black Educational Building was dedicated in
1999.
Today, Birdwell serves
over 450 students and features a dual language program and Head
Start classes.
