The Tyler Independent School District Board of Trustees authorized the creation of the TISD Police Department in April 2000. Since that time, the department has grown from two officers, to eight officers and one civilian employee. TISD Police Officers are licensed by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE) and are listed as peace officers under the code of criminal procedure article 2.12(8). TISD Police officers have the same authority as any peace officer in the State of Texas and enforce all laws whether on or off TISD property.
TISD Police Department jurisdiction covers approximately 205 square miles of Smith County Texas, and the department serves over 21,000 students and faculty on a daily basis. Four officers are assigned to the districts two high schools and four officers work patrol covering the districts 35 properties and bus routes.
