September Tyler ISD Board of Trustees Named 2005 Region VII School Board of the Year and Texas Honor Board
The Tyler ISD Board of Trustees has been named the 2005 Region VII School Board of the Year. Region VII includes 96 public school districts in East Texas, encompassing 17 counties.

The school boards were judged by a selection committee in ten areas related to board performance and effectiveness including: Functions as a policy-making body; Adherence to adopted board policies; Support for educational performance in accordance with state-established standards; Support for educational improvement projects; Commitment to a code of ethics; Provision of financial support for the school system; Participation in workshops and other performance improvement programs; Placement of the welfare of children served by the school system above personal or political motives; Public relations efforts, including community awareness; and Maintenance of harmonious and supportive relationships among board members.

Tyler ISD now knows that the Board is one of only six school boards that have been named Honor Boards for the state of Texas. The 2005 School Board Awards competition is sponsored by the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA). During the Texas Association of School Boards/Texas Association of School Administrators (TASB/TASA) 45th Annual Convention, each of the Honor Boards will be interviewed by the TASA School Board Awards Committee. As a result of those interviews, the 2005 Outstanding School Board Award for the state of Texas will be selected and the winner will be announced at the Convention's Third General Session.

The other five Texas Honor Boards are: Alvin ISD, Belton ISD, Nederland ISD, Ricardo ISD, San Antonio ISD.

Superintendent, Dr. David Simmons, nominated the Board for this award. The nomination of the Tyler ISD Board of Trustees highlighted many initiatives and improvements in the district, in both academics and fiscal responsibility, over the past two years. Academic achievements included: expansion of the International Baccalaureate program, increased participation and achievement in Advanced Placement testing, expansion of magnet programs at Bell Elementary School and Jones Elementary School, improved TAKS scores, increased SAT/ACT test participation, and a reduction in the achievement gap between white and minority students.

Improvements to educational environments, provided by the successful bond election in November, 2004 was also cited as a significant accomplishment. The district has also received numerous awards over the past several years for financial management including a rating of “Superior” by the Texas Education Agency, a “Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting” by the Association of School Business Officials International, and the “Certificate of Excellence” by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada.
