Counseling and Guidance Services . . .continued

Since of the purposes of responsive services is intervention, counselor response is imperative before personal or educational development becomes at risk. Students who are on the verge of making poor choices or do not know how to respond to a personal situation need immediate guidance. Counselors and the classroom teacher can establish priorities for helping students make and implement individual plans for their education and careers.

The District aggressively addresses disruptive behavior and specifically counsels students who are dealing with trauma, loss, and crisis situations. The guidance curriculum is designed to systematically assist students in developing skills they need to enhance their personal, social, educational, and career development. A systematic and planned approach used by counselors will help students in at-risk situations be successful in school. The guidance curriculum includes skills development and the application of skills in self-esteem, motivation to achieve, decision-making, goal-setting, planning and problem-solving skills, interpersonal effectiveness, communicator skills, cross-cultural effectiveness, and responsible behavior. Full implementation of the guidance curriculum requires a partnership between counselors and teachers, since instruction in guidance begins with the children's first experiences in school. All curriculum materials are available on each campus for parents to preview during school hours. The guidance curriculum provides guidance content in a systematic way to all students.
