H1N1 Frequently Asked Questions

The following are some of the most frequently asked questions about H1N1 and Tyler ISD responses.

What preventative measures are being taken by Tyler ISD to prevent the spread H1N1 among students? School nurses are monitoring student illness and teachers are stressing the importance of good hygiene practices such as hand washing and covering coughs and sneezes.  As a precaution, Tyler ISD has implemented aggressive sanitation measures at all campuses.  District staff members are frequently disinfecting common areas, such as hallways, lockers, door knobs, and hand rails with a germicidal.  As another precaution, Tyler ISD is also using this same germicidal spray to disinfect the interior of the school buses on a daily basis.

How long should my child stay out of school should he or she exhibit flu like symptoms? Students with a flu-like illness (fever with a cough or sore throat), should not attend school for at least 24 hours after fever is gone. Fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.

What are the signs of flu? The symptoms of H1N1 flu in people are similar to the symptoms of seasonal influenza and include fever, sore throat and coughing.  Some people with H1N1 flu also have reported runny nose, lack of appetite, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. However, the presence of these symptoms does not necessarily mean H1N1 flu. Additional information on H1N1 flu can be found at http://www.cdc.gov/H1N1FLU or http://www.flu.gov.

Should the sibling of a child exhibiting flu-like symptoms stay home as well? At this time, Health Department officials are not recommending that siblings of sick students remain at home, unless they themselves are exhibiting flu-like symptoms.

Will Tyler ISD close school should a case of H1N1 be confirmed at a campus? At this time, The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is not advising school dismissal for a suspected or confirmed case of novel influenza A (H1N1).

What plans do I need to make before my child is sick?

Before you are faced with a sick child, find out what your employer’s procedures are for working from home while you care for children out of school.  If working from home is not possible, plan ahead for child care at home if your child gets sick.
