Options for Academically Advanced Elementary
Students
All Tyler ISD elementary
schools offer outstanding enrichment opportunities for academically advanced
students. Teachers trained in differentiation techniques work diligently to
provide challenging lessons structured to meet the individual needs of each
child. Our elementary schools also provide opportunities for students to
explore and experience music, art, technology, and physical activity through
a variety of regular classes and special events.
For more concentrated
enrichment opportunities, students can apply for admission to a TISD
elementary magnet school. Applications for each school may be picked up in
the school office or in the Office of Advanced Academic Studies. Students do
not need to be identified as gifted to apply or to be accepted. Students who
reside within the attendance zone of a magnet school do not need to apply
for admission beyond the normal registration process. For questions about
magnet schools, parents may contact the campus directly or may call the
Office of Advanced Academic Studies at (903)-262-3498. In addition, each
school provides information through the websites linked below.

Elementary students
identified as gifted can take part in activities provided through the TARGET
Academy. TARGET Academy, housed in the historic Gary Elementary located at
730 S. Chilton, provides specialized curriculum designed to provide depth,
complexity, and acceleration for academically gifted students. Students who
qualify for TARGET Academy report to their regular campus to check in on
their designated weekly TARGET day, then ride the bus to the Gary Complex
for a full day of stimulating lessons and activities. At the end of the day,
students return to their home campuses for dismissal.

Options for Academically Advanced Middle
School Students
Our TISD middle schools
provide an exciting array of opportunities which allow our sixth, seventh,
and eighth grade students to explore areas of interest and talent. Students
who wish to experience greater rigor in academic coursework may sign up for
pre-Advanced Placement (also call Pre-AP or PAP) courses. Students with
talents in the areas of fine art, athletics, and leadership may participate
in band, art, choir, athletics, student council, special interest clubs, and
other opportunities unique to each campus.
TISD offers three magnet
middle schools. Moore MST Middle School is a math, science, and technology
magnet school. Hogg Middle School offers a fully authorized International
Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. Students may apply for a magnet
transfer to either program by contacting the school office in January.
