Job Description


REPORTS TO: Deputy Superintendent

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Master’s Degree or higher

  2. Texas Mid-management, or appropriate Texas Certificate.

  3. Valid Texas teaching certificate with at least five years successful teaching and administrative experience.

  4. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Trustees may find appropriate.

SUPERVISES: Secondary Principals, Alternative School Principals, Chief of Police, Facilitator of Discipline Services, Other professional and paraprofessional staff as assigned.

 

JOB GOAL:

  1. To ensure that each secondary school student is provided with the richest educational experience the district can provide.

  2. To provide leadership and management of the secondary instructional programs and related operational services of the district.

  3. To oversee the operations of the district police department.

  4. To oversee the operations of the discipline services department.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Administrative/Professional Pay Grade 8, 226 days Wage/Hour/Status: Exempt


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

1.      

Oversee the operations of the district police department and serve as supervisor of the district's Chief of Police.

2.    

Oversee the district's Discipline Services Department and serve as supervisor of the district's facilitator of discipline services.

3.    

Works with appropriate staff to develop, maintain, and revise curriculum documents based on systematic review and analysis.          

4.   

Plans, implements, and evaluates TEKS-based instructional programs with teachers and principals, including learning objects, instructional strategies, and assessment techniques.

5.    

Apply research and data to improve the content, sequence, and outcomes of the teaching/learning process.

6.      

Involve instructional staff in evaluating and selecting instructional materials to meet student learning needs; ensure the use of technology in the teaching-learning process.

7.      

Secure consultants, specialists, and other community resources to assist principals and supervised instructional staff in attaining objectives.

8. 

Respond appropriately to situations that could impair the teaching/learning process or could threaten safety and the well being of students and staff.

9.      

Implement the policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy; offers constructive suggestions to ensure that policies and regulations support the teaching/learning process.

10.   

Compile, maintain, file, and present all reports, records, and other documents required.

11.   

Demonstrates responsible fiscal control over assigned program budgets.

12.   

Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs; ensure that fiscal resources address the mission of the district.

13.     

Assist with the implementation of the PDAS; may serve as second appraiser.

14.    

Conferences regularly with assigned staff to discuss performance; jointly develops improvement objectives to identify professional growth opportunities.

15.     

Demonstrates skill in "coaching" staff, provides technical assistance to principals, teachers, and staff concerning the teaching/learning process, and encourages improved over-all performance.

16. 

Improves leadership skills through self-initiated professional development activities.

17. 

Performs duties in a professional, ethical, and responsible manner as defined in the TEA Code of Ethics for Educators

18.   

Uses information provided through the District appraisal process to improve performance; evaluates the job performance of employees to ensure effectiveness.

19.     

Performs other tasks and assumes such responsibilities as related to the position and as assigned.

20.     

Ensures that campus principals adhere to the 1970 Federal Desegration Order regarding staffing.

21.     

Ensures that campus principals oversee the PEIMS process and act as liaison between their campus and the district level.
        22. Conducts analyses of instructional programs and materials, and works to assure that courses are designed with adequate attention to scope and sequence for effective learning.
        23. Stimulates experimentation, visitation, scrutiny of objectives, and enrichment of curricula and teaching methods by secondary school instructional staff.
        24. Observes the in-class performance of teachers, and confers and consults with them regarding their professional development.
        25. Serves as a resource person for or leader of curriculum studies and workshops.
        26. Keeps informed about current trends and practices in the various subject matter fields and disseminates professional information and materials to secondary school staff.
        27. Schedules and directs in-service workshops for secondary school staff and participates in department meetings.
       28. Guides research, textbook selection, examination procedures, the setting of grading standards, and the effective use of facilities and equipment, at the secondary school level.
       29. Coordinates and maintains such record keeping as is necessary.
       30. Assists in the recruitment, screening, hiring, and assigning of secondary school instructional personnel.
       31. Conducts an instructional orientation program annually for new secondary school personnel.
       32. Prepares and administers the secondary education budget, exclusive of salaries.
       33. Works toward developing an improved understanding of children's educational needs on the part of teachers, administrators, and parents, and interprets the educational progress of secondary school students to them.
       34. Initiates and maintains effective liaison with other school districts and with independent schools to keep abreast of new educational developments and ideas.
       35. Keeps current with educational developments and the literature in the field of secondary education and participates in the affairs of state and national professional societies devoted to the advancement of elementary school education.

Working Conditions:

Mental Demands:  Reading, ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); maintain emotional control under stress; coordinate district-wide curriculum functions; interpret policy, procedures, and data.

Physical Demands:  Repetitive hand motions; prolonged use of computer terminal possible.  Frequent district-wide travel; occasional statewide travel; frequent prolonged and irregular hours.
