REPORTS TO: Director of Special Education

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Master’s degree preferred.
2. Texas Teacher and Special Education Certificate
3. At least three years successful experience as a classroom teacher.
4. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Trustees may find appropriate.

SUPERVISES: Monitors PPCD/ALEC/Autism


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Administrative/Professional Pay Grade 3, 214 days Wage/hour Status: Exempt


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

 

1.       

Maintains a positive and effective relationship with supervisors, colleagues, parents, and students.

2.       

Deals with sensitively and fairly with persons from diverse cultural backgrounds.

3.       

Screens 3 - 5 year old children when indicated. 

4.       

Coordinates the PPCD and Autism evaluations district-wide,  keeps the calendar for the assessment center. 

5.       

Maintains up-to-date knowledge about each student in the life skills classes. 

6.       

Attends ARDS for life skills/PPCD/Autism students including all initial ARDS and other Life Skills ARDS when requested by the I.C. or diagnostician. 

7.       

Staffs with Special Education Appraisal Facilitators on a regular basis to inform them of changes and concerns in the life skills/PPCD/Austism classes. 

8.       

Conducts classroom observations and personal interviews; works with the life skills/PPCD/Austism teacher to improve instruction for each individual student.      

9.       

Complies with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and the local Board of Trustees in pursuing the mission of the school.

10.     

Is responsible to the Director of Special Education and serves as the liaison between Tyler ISD and parents of life skills students, other school districts, ECI, etc. 

11.     

Conducts meetings with life skills/PPCD/Austism teachers to keep them informed about curriculum, alternative assessments, budget, transportation, etc.

12.     

Assists in determining placement in the central units.  Staffs decisions with the facilitators and the director. 

13.     

Assists classroom teachers with the implementation of the IEPs.

14.     

Shares or assumes the responsibility of the confidential folders.

15.     

Keeps informed about new state and federal guidelines and policies concerning special education.

16.     

Coordinates and supervises extended year services including sending notices, making arrangements, serving on school committees, and providing follow-up.

17.     

Assists in life skills curriculum development and monitors its effectiveness.

18.     

Promotes and works toward inclusion as appropriate for each life skills student.

19.     

Confers with parents, teachers, and students/or principals for the purpose of interpretation of evaluation data, instructional procedures, and student progress and behaviors.

20.     

Plans and assists in implementation of appropriate staff development programs.

21.     

Effectively communicates to students, staff, and parents school guidelines for student conduct especially as they relate to life skills/PPCD/Austism students.

22.     

Coordinates in-home and parent training services.

23.     

Encourages plans for improved student behavior that reflects enhanced opportunities for learning.

24.     

Improves leadership skills through self-initiated professional development activities.

25.     

Performs duties in a professional, ethical, and responsible manner as defined in the TEA Code of Ethics for Educators.

26.     

Uses information provided through the District appraisal process to improve performance.

27.     

Performs other tasks and assumes such responsibilities as related to the position and as assigned.

28.     

Annually establishes and meets performance goals.

Computer, copier, fax, and related office equipment 

Working Conditions:

Mental Demands:  Reading, ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); maintain emotional control under stress; coordinate campus support functions.

Physical Demands:  Moderate standing, stooping, bending and lifting; ability to control sudden violent or extreme physical acts of others and exhibit rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously.  May be required to lift and transfer students to and from wheelchair or assist with positioning students with physical disabilities; prolonged and irregular hours; regular districtwide travel to multiple work locations as assigned.
