657 - ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL, MIDDLE SCHOOL

        Job Description


REPORTS TO: Principal

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Master’s Degree
2. Texas Assistant Principal or other appropriate Texas certificate
3. At least three years successful experience as a classroom teacher
4. Certified Professional Development and Appraisal System (PDAS) appraiser
5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Trustees may find appropriate.

SUPERVISES: Shares supervisory responsibility of staff with school principal. Supervise teachers, custodians, paraprofessionals, clerical personnel and others as assigned.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Administrative/Professional Pay Grade 5, 204 days Wage/Hour Status: Exempt


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

 

1.    

Participates in collaborative processes to develop campus improvement plans with staff, parents, and community members.

2.    

Assists principal in maintaining and using information systems to maintain and records to track progress on campus performance objectives and academic excellence indicators.

3.      

Participates in the development and evaluation of the educational programs.   

4.    

Encourages and supports the development of innovative instructional programs, helping teachers pilot such efforts when appropriate. 

5.     

Promotes the use of technology in the teaching/learning process.

6.     

Complies with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and the local Board of Trustees.

7.      

Supervises operations in the absence of the regular principal.

8.     

Help plan daily school activities by participating in the development of class schedules, teacher assignments, and extracurricular activity schedules.

9.     

Supervise reporting and monitoring of student attendance and work with attendance clerk on follow-up investigations.

10.  

Assists with developing budgets based upon documented program needs, estimated enrollment, personnel, and other fiscal needs.

11.   

Coordinates transportation, custodial, and other support services.

12.    

Requisition supplies, textbooks, and equipment; check inventory, maintain records, and verify receipts for materials.

13.  

Assist with safety inspections and safety-drill practice activities.  

14.    

Ensure that students are adequately supervised during noninstructional periods.  

15.    

Ensures that school rules are uniformly observed and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable.

16. 

Conducts conferences on student and school issues with parents, students, and teachers. 

17.  

Help to develop a student discipline management system that results in positive student behavior.  

18.    

Coordinates and supervises student activities as assigned  by the principal.

19.   

Maintains accurate individual student disciplinary records.

20. 

Observe employee performance, record observations, and conduct evaluation conferences.  Serve as second appraiser for designated teacher appraisal system.  

21. 

Confers with staff members regarding their professional growth and leadership skills; works jointly with them to develop and accomplish improvement goals.

22.   

Identifies, provides, and/or encourages participation in available inservice training options to address the goals identified through the growth planning process.

23.    

Assists the principal in interviewing, selecting, and orienting new staff

24.  

Improves leadership skills through self-initiated professional development activities.

25.  

Performs duties in a professional, ethical, and responsible manner as defined in the TEA Code of Ethics for Educators.

26.  

Uses information provided through the District appraisal process to improve performance.

27.   

Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.        

28.  

Projects a positive image to the community.

29.   

Performs other tasks and assumes such responsibilities as related to the position and as assigned.

30.  

Annually establishes and meets performance goals.

Working Conditions: 

Mental Demands:  Reading, ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); maintain emotional control under stress; coordinate campus support functions. 

Physical Demands:  Moderate standing, stooping, bending and lifting; ability to control sudden violent or extreme physical acts of others and exhibit rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously.  May be subjected to adverse and hazardous working conditions.  Work with frequent interruptions.  Occasional prolonged and irregular hours.  Occasional districtwide travel.
