REPORTS TO: Principal

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Master’s Degree
2. Texas school counselor’s certificate
3. Three years of teaching experience
4. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Trustees may find appropriate

SUPERVISES: Assigned counseling assistants and clerical employees

 


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Administrative/Professional Pay Grade 3, 204 days Wage/Hour Status: Exempt


 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

 

1.         

Provides guidance to individuals and groups of students to develop education, career, and personal plans.

2.         

Counsels and serves as a resource person for parents on concerns relative to their students.

3.         

Plans, implements, and evaluates a comprehensive program of guidance including counseling services as it relates to individual campus needs, i e classroom guidance, individual and group counseling, assemblies, guest speakers, special programs.

4.         

Consults with administrators and teachers regarding the developmental guidance.

5.         

Provides confidential crisis counseling and consultation to students.

6.         

Develops and maintains effective individual and group relationships with students and parents.

7.         

Consults with administrators, faculty and other special services personnel relative to school’s curricular offerings.

8.         

Conferences with students, teachers, parents, and other relevant individuals concerning grades and works together for improvement.

9.         

Cooperates with administrators and teachers in identifying students with special abilities and in providing appropriate classroom placement and disseminating information about special programs such as the TIP program.

10.      

Informs students of the requirements of state mandated tests.

11.      

Assists students in developing individual four year high school plans.

12.      

Conducts registration conferences with parents and students new to the district, in addition to yearly pre-registration conferences for current students.

13.      

Supervises, in collaboration with the principal, the operation of scheduling of students.

14.      

Participates in the special education referral process and the ARD meetings when appropriate; collaborates with other school and district staff to help students.

15.      

Uses an effective referral process for assisting students and others to use community agencies and services.

16.      

Works cooperatively with the staff to provide information concerning student needs.

17.      

Assists in procedures for course selection and scheduling students.

18.      

Acts as school coordinator for the administration of the state-mandated tests and the district’s standardized testing programs; provides training for test administrators and proctors.

19.      

Collects and interprets test data for students, parents, and staff, relevant to tutorial, instructional programs, and scheduling.

20.      

Maintains the confidentiality of student assessment and of student assessment.

21.      

Works cooperatively with elementary schools to ease the transition of students from elementary school and with high school counselors for the appropriate placement of students and to east the transition from middle school.

22.      

Supports teachers in teaching “TEKS” identified in the SBOE rules for curriculum which are guidance-related.

23.      

Assists in classroom and/or behavior management planning for students.

24.      

Supervise the processing of student report cards; disseminate summer school information

25.      

Supervises the maintenance of the individual cumulative folders containing standardized test scores, state mandated test scores, grades, home language surveys and other pertinent data including special programs placement.

26.      

Identifies and verifies PEIMS data for identifying students in “at risk” situations.

27.      

Improves leadership skills through self-initiated professional development activities.

28.      

Performs duties in a professional, ethical, and responsible manner as defined in the TEA Code of Ethics for Educators.

29.      

Complies with district policies, as well as state and federal guidelines.

30.      

Uses information provided through the District appraisal process to improve performance.

31.      

Performs other tasks and assumes such responsibilities as related to the position and as assigned.

32.      

Annually establishes and meets performance goals.

 

EQUIPMENT USED:  Personal computer, AS400, copier, fax, audio-visual equipment

Working Conditions:

Mental Demands:  Reading, ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); maintain emotional control under stress;  interpret policy, procedures, and data.

Physical Demands: Occasional prolonged and irregular hours.  Moderate standing, stooping, bending and lifting; may need the ability to control sudden violent or extreme physical acts of others and exhibit rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously.  May be subjected to adverse and hazardous working conditions.
