REPORTS TO: Principal and Director of Special Education

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Master’s degree
2. Texas Teacher and Special Education Certificate; Diagnostician Certificate
3. At least three years successful experience as a classroom teacher.
4. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Trustees may find appropriate

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Administrative/Professional Pay Grade 3, 192 days Wage/Hour Status: Exempt


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

 

  1.  

Presents a positive role model for students that supports the mission of the school district.

  1.  

Maintains a positive and effective relationship with supervisors and colleagues.

Deals sensitively and fairly with persons from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Effectively communicates with colleagues, students, and parents.

Assesses and responds to needs related to job responsibilities.

Assists in the selection of assessment materials and equipment.

  1.  

Develops and coordinates a continuing evaluation of the assessment program and implements changes based on these findings.

  1.  

Receives student referrals and implements the appraisal process.  

  1.  

Selects and administers formal and informal assessments to determine student eligibility for special education services according to federal and TEA regulations. 

  1.  

Collects and organizes relevant assessment data from student cumulative folders, classroom teachers, principals, support staff, parents, and outside resource personnel.

  1.  

Conducts classroom observations and personal interviews.      

  1.  

Complies with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and the local Board of Trustees in pursuing the mission of the school.

  1.  

Serves as the liaison between campus and the district’s Directors and Coordinators.

  1.  

Serves as campus team member in designing, implementing, and evaluating for special education student placement and behavior management plans; shares the responsibility for the systematic screening, referral, assessment, and placement for students in Special Education.

  1.  

Serves as a member of committees as outlined in the referral and appraisal process of the summer, hospitalized, and institutionalized children.

  1.  

Assists classroom teachers with the implementation of the IEPs.

  1.  

Shares or assumes responsibility of the confidential folders.

  1.  

Keeps informed about new state and federal guidelines and policies concerning special education.

  1.  

Is responsible for re-evaluation, eligibility folders, and annual reviews, where appropriate, in central units.

  1.  

Staffs individual cases with Instructional Consultant, Principal, or 504 committee where appropriate.

  1.  

Serves as Lead Appraisal Person, consultant, and Campus-level consultant for central units where appropriate.

  1.  

Confers with parents, teachers, and students or principals for the purpose of interpretation of assessment data, instructional procedures, and student progress and behaviors.

  1.  

Plans and assists in implementation of appropriate staff development programs.

  1.  

Provides technical assistance to regular education teachers through pre-referral and post-referral intervention.

  1.  

Effectively communicates to students, staff, and parents school guidelines for student conduct especially as they relate to special education students.

  1.  

Through the Central ARD Committee process, attends conferences with parents, students, and teachers concerning school and students. 

  1.  

Encourages plans for improved student behavior that reflects enhanced opportunities for learning.

  1.  

Improves leadership skills through self-initiated professional development activities.

  1.  

Performs duties in a professional, ethical, and responsible manner as defined in the TEA Code of Ethics for Educators.

  1.  

Uses information provided through the District appraisal process to improve performance.

  1.  

Reviews, evaluates, and recommends new appraisal instruments to provide the most effective diagnostic battery possible, including modeling of certain testing procedures.

  1.  

Articulates the district mission to the community; solicits its support in realizing the mission.

  1.  

Demonstrates effective and verbal communication skills.

  1.  

Demonstrates awareness of school-community needs and initiates activities to meet those identified needs.

  1.  

Performs other tasks and assumes such responsibilities as related to the position and as assigned.

Working Conditions:

Mental Demands:  Reading, ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); maintain emotional control under stress; coordinate campus support functions. 

Physical Demands:  Moderate standing, stooping, bending and lifting; ability to control sudden violent or extreme physical acts of others and exhibit rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously.  May be required to lift and transfer students to and from wheelchair or assist with positioning students with physical disabilities; prolonged and irregular hours; frequent districtwide travel.
