622A - HEAD START COUNSELOR

       

 

REPORTS TO:    Head Start Director

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Master's Degree; Supervision or Mid-Management certificate

  2. Licensed Professional Counselor, or Equivalent

  3. Experience in working with low-income families

  4. Experience in working with Head Start, preferred

  5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Trustees and the Policy Council may find appropriate

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Administrative/Professional Pay Grade 2 , 226 days   Wage/Hour Status: Exempt


JOB GOAL:  Observe student behaviors targeting social skills, emotional well being, test and diagnose childhood symptomology of behavioral and mental disorders in approximately 400 Head Start children ages 3-5 years old, at least twice annually (pre/post).


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

1.

Provides counseling by responding to student individual needs and concerns.

2.

Uses effective techniques of elementary school counseling.

3.

Ensures that the use of student records is for the benefit of students and personnel working with those students.

4.

Provides parent and staff trainings relative to re-directing inappropriate behaviors.

5.

Shares professional expertise with parents, teachers and administrators, which includes therapeutic intervention and psycho-education for families of children in the program.

6.

Uses an effective referral process for assisting students and others to community agencies and services.

7.

Develop Behavior Management Plans for students in the school setting and the home.

8.

Assesses all student behaviors within the first (45) days of their enrollment into the program and provide written reports and follow-up as needed (pre-assessment).

9.

Asses all student behaviors within the last (45) days of the school year and provide written reports and follow-up as needed (post-assessment).

10.

Provide Mental Health Services in accordance with the Head Start Program Performance Standards.

11.

Maintains the confidentiality of student records.

12.

Interprets information and ideas for parents, teachers, and administrators.

13.

Serves as an advocate for students.

14.

Collects and disseminates information about students to other relevant school professionals.

15.

Develops and maintains positive working relations with other school professionals.

16.

Develops and maintains positive working relationships with representatives of community resources.

17.

Improves leadership skills through self-initiated professional development activities.

18.

Performs duties in a professional, ethical, and responsible manner as defined in the TEA Code of Ethics for Educators.

19.

Performs others tasks and assumes such responsibilities as related to the position and as assigned.

Annually establishes and meets performance goals.

Working Conditions: Reading, ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); maintain emotional control under stress; interpret policy, procedures and data.
Physical Demand: Occasional prolonged and irregular hours.  Moderate standing, stooping, bending and lifting; may need the ability to control sudden violent or extreme physical acts of others and exhibit rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. May be subject to adverse and hazardous working conditions.
