609 - HEAD START SOCIAL SERVICE WORKER

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree
2. Social Service Certification
3. Social Service Work experience
4. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Trustees may
find appropriate.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Administrative/Professional Pay Grade 1, 226 days
Wage/Hour Status: Exempt
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Presents a positive role model for students that supports the mission of
Head Start and the school district. |
|
2.
|
Maintains a positive and effective relationship with supervisors and
colleagues. |
|
3.
|
Deals sensitively and fairly with persons from diverse cultural
backgrounds. |
|
4.
|
Effectively communicates with colleagues, students, and parents;
participates in policy council meetings as a non-voting member; develops
and maintains effective individual and group relationships. |
|
5.
|
Assesses and responds to needs and recruitment of the children,
including children with disabilities; visits classrooms and consults
with teachers on services needed. |
|
6.
|
Makes home visits as needed to gather information relating to students.
|
|
7.
|
Develops and coordinates a continuing evaluation of the Social Services
program and parent involvement; implements changes based on findings. |
|
8.
|
Effectively plans the social services and parent involvement program;
provides assistance to develop education and personal plans.
|
|
9.
|
Performs casework service with parents as needed to increase the
parents’ understanding, their constructive participation in resolving
their child’s problems, and their knowledge and use of available and
appropriate resources.
|
|
10.
|
Serves as liaison between head start student, home, school, and
community resources, such as family service agencies, child guidance
clinics, courts, protective services, doctors and clergy members.
|
|
11.
|
Utilizes the referral process to help students and others use special
programs and services, including counseling, emergency assistance, or
crisis intervention. Assists
with the follow-up of the service needs; provides information to
families on available community services. |
|

|
Compiles, maintains, and files all reports, records, and other documents
required. Assists with the
confidentiality of all required reports.
|
|
13.
|
Makes parent contact/follow-up for children whose participation in Head
Start is irregular; tracks students who withdraw. |
|
14.
|
Assists in the planning and implementation of parent involvement
activities. |
|
15.
|
Monitors the progress of selected students participating in the extended
day/extended year STEP program. |
|
16.
|
Complies with policies established by federal and state law, State Board
of Education rule, and the local Board of Trustees in pursuing the
mission of the school district. |
|
17.
|
Keeps informed about new state and federal guidelines and policies. |
|
18.
|
Complies with all district and campus routines and regulations. |
|
19.
|
Effectively communicates to students, staff, and parents school
guidelines for student conduct especially as they relate to Head Start
students. |
|
20.
|
Encourages
plans for improved student behavior that reflects enhanced opportunities
for learning. |
|
21.
|
Assists
in creating an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the
maturity level and interests of the head start students. |
|
22.
|
Improves leadership skills through self-initiated professional
development activities. |
|
23.
|
Performs duties in a professional, ethical, and responsible manner as
defined in the TEA Code of Ethics for Educators. |
|
24.
|
Uses information provided through the District appraisal process to
improve performance. |
|
25.
|
Articulates the district mission and the Head Start mission in the area
of social service and parent involvement to the community; solicits its
support in realizing the mission. |
|
26.
|
Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills. |
|
27.
|
Cooperates with existing community resources such as neighborhood and
community groups.
|
|
28.
|
Assists parents to develop their skills and knowledge in the area of
parenting, medical/dental topics, mental health, nutrition, early
childhood development, and personal growth. |
|
29.
|
Performs other tasks and assumes such responsibilities as related to the
position and as assigned. |
|

Annually

Working Conditions:
Mental Demands: Reading, ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); maintain emotional control under stress; coordinate Head Start social service functions.
Physical Demands: Moderate standing, stooping, bending and lifting; may be required to lift and transfer students to and from wheelchair or assist with positioning students with physical disabilities; ability to control sudden violent or extreme physical acts of others and exhibit rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Occasional prolonged and irregular hours.; frequent district-wide travel.
