607 - HEAD START NURSE

REPORTS TO: Director, Head Start

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Registered Nurse Certification; valid nurse license to practice professional nursing in Texas from the State Board of Nurse Examiners.
2. Two years nursing experience, preferably in community health.
3. Keyboarding and computer proficiency; organizational skills.
4. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Trustees may find appropriate.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Administrative/Professional Pay Grade 1, 226 days Wage/Hour Status: Exempt


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES

1.        

Communicates and promotes high expectation levels for staff and student health, and provides recognition of excellence and achievement.

2.        

Supports the health Service program and initiates new programs to promote a positive, caring    and healthy environment that is safe and promotes learning. 

3.        

Is effective in scheduling activities and the use of resources needed to accomplish an effective   Head Start health program.

4.        

Is responsible for maintaining proper administration and security of medications, first aide, supplies and equipment in the clinic for health screening and treatment of Head Start students. 

5.        

Assists in identifying/researching disabilities involving Head start students according to the current Disability criteria standards. 

6.        

Participates in Admission, Dismissal, and Review (ARD) meetings involving students with disabilities. 

7.        

Assist with the Sight program Review Instrument as it relates to the Health/Social Service components.

8.        

Assumes responsibility for first aide to sick or injured Head Start students and staff. 

9.        

Coordinates all mandated screening programs; makes necessary referrals; assumes the responsibility for control of communicable diseases.

10.     

Coordinates the health program of Head Start. 

11.     

Complies with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and the local Board of Trustees in pursuing the mission of the school district.

12.     

Keeps informed about new state and federal guidelines and laws.

13.     

Maintains a proper log of clinic contacts, incidence and accidents; submits a monthly report to the Health Services Coordinator and the Head Start Director. 

14.     

Submits reports (by deadlines) mandated by state and federal guidelines, i.e. vision, hearing, scoliosis, immunization, and TB skin testing.

15.     

Assists in compiling and submitting information concerning the Program Information Report (PIR), records, and other documents required by the performance standards of Head Start. 

16.     

Assists in revising and writing plans to add quality to the Health/social Services component. 

17.     

Assists in organizing the Health Services Advisory Committee.

18.     

Improves leadership skills through self-initiated and state required professional development activities.

19.     

Performs duties in a professional, ethical, and responsible manner as defined in the TEA Code of Ethics for Educators.

20.     

Uses information provided through the District appraisal process to improve performance.

21.     

Facilitates CPR and First Aide classes for staff. 

22.     

Coordinates  referrals to health care professionals for medial diagnostic services and treatment.                     

23.     

Identifies, reports, and provides supportive services in child abuse cases, working in conjunction with the Social services coordinator.

24.     

Assists in transporting children for medical and dental exam and follow-up to various locations in town and out-of-town.

25.     

Performs other tasks and assumes such responsibilities as related to the position and as assigned.

26.     

Annually establishes and meets performance goals.

EQUIPMENT USED: Computer, copier, fax, audiometer, and other related health services equipment.

Working Conditions:

Mental Demands:  Reading, ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); maintain emotional control under stress; coordinate several requests simultaneously; interpret policies and procedures. 

Physical Demands:  Moderate standing, sitting, stooping, bending and lifting; biological exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases.   Occasional prolonged and irregular hours; frequent district-wide travel.
