606A - ASSISTIVE AND SPECIAL EDUCATION TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST


 

REPORTS TO:  Director, Technology Services and Director of Special Education


QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Bachelor’s degree, with graduate work preferred.

  2. Teacher’s certificate required; CIS certification, IPT endorsement, or specialized technology training preferred.

  3. Three years teaching experience.

  4. Computer proficiency; working knowledge of LAN/WAN technologies preferred.

  5. Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  6. Experience working with students using alternative communication/assistive technology.

  7. Four years or more work experience installing, maintaining, and repairing networked computers and peripherals.

  8. Knowledge of computer workstation setup; both stand-alone and networked.

  9. Knowledge of common computer hardware and software applications.

  10. Knowledge of network operating systems and theory of operation.

  11. Ability to install, maintain, and repair computers and peripherals including printers, modems, and scanners.

  12. Ability to install and maintain network cables and hardware.

  13. Ability to diagnose and perform repairs.

  14. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Trustees may find appropriate.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Administrative/Professional Pay Grade 2, 204 days Wage/Hour Status: Exempt


1.      

Coordinate district and campus level assistive technology evaluation team.

2.    

Facilitate team based approach to effective decision making about assistive technology.

3.      

Develop assistive technology training guides, materials, and manuals for the district.                                                          

4.      

Train teachers, teacher assistants, students, and caregivers on AT systems, as necessary, and document accordingly.

5.      

Train educators and evaluation personnel: district and campus operating guidelines, devices and software, TEA policies, integrating AT into classroom curricula, use of AT action plans, legal issues.

6.      

Maintain a system to track AT on each campus to ensure AT system implementation.

7.      

Gather information and write evaluation reports adhering to timelines.

8.      

Coordinate and train teachers in implementing new or updated hardware and software and assisting them as problems arise.

9.      

Provide telephone support to district special education staff members for technology-related problems through the TISD Help Desk.                         

10.  

Assist the special education department in the organization and placement of computers and in the evaluation and selection of technological instructional materials.

11.  

Assist with the maintenance of and the upgrading of district equipment to meet the minimum standards for the WAN as set by the district.

12.  

Help to coordinate the installation and configuration of computers, printers, scanners, etc. on the district LAN/WAN.

13.  

Provide technical support by troubleshooting windows and/or Macintosh hardware and software.

14.  

Install and upgrade computers and peripherals throughout the district.

15.  

Install network cabling and network peripherals

16.  

Relocate computer hardware, peripherals, and equipment as needed.

17.  

Install and configure software as needed.

18.  

Assist with the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of data communication circuits and equipment.

19.  

Diagnose and repair equipment including printers, computers, and network devices.

20.  

Provide technical assistance to faculty and staff for use of technology equipment.

21.  

Maintain accurate records of time and materials required to perform repairs and   service.

22.  

Operate tools and equipment to prescribed safety procedures.

23.  

Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, carrying, etc.

24.  

Correct unsafe conditions in the work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to the supervisor immediately.

25.  

Respond to after-hours emergencies as needed.

26.  

Maintain positive and cooperative working relationships with colleagues and other in the conduct of district business and demonstrates team work in daily activities.

27.  

Is prompt and timely in completing daily task.

28.  

Annually establishes and meets performance goals.

29.  

Perform other tasks and assumes such responsibilities as related to the position and as assigned.

30.  

Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.

31.  

Use information provided through the District appraisal process to improve performance.

32.  

Perform duties in a professional, ethical, and responsible manner as defined in the TEA Code of Ethics for Educators.

33.  

Improve leadership skills and continuously updates expertise in current technology trends through self-initiated professional development activities.

34.  

Keep informed about new state and federal guidelines and laws, including copyright laws.

35.  

Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and the local Board of Trustees in pursuing the mission of the school district.

 

EQUIPMENT USED:

Computers, printers, scanners, FAX, copiers, typewriters, TVs, VCRs, presentation systems, laser disk players, video, digital, and still cameras and other technology/media equipment.

Working Conditions:

Mental Demands:  Reading, ability to communicate effectively (verbal, electronic, and written); maintain emotional control under stress; ability to operate computer and other technologies listed; ability to evaluate instructional materials, speak in public, design and organize training materials and to schedule multiple tasks.

Physical Demands:  Moderate standing, sitting, stooping, bending and lifting; repetitive hand motions and prolonged use of computer. Occasional prolonged and irregular hours; frequent district-wide travel; laboratory installations and configuration; work in close proximity of electronic equipment.
