TITLE: 

QUALIFICATIONS:        

  1. High School Diploma or GED.

  2. Type 50 wpm; computer proficiency.

  3. National Library of Congress Literary Braille Transcribing Certificate.

  4. Desire and ability to work with and communicate effectively with staff, students, and parents.

  5. To comply with the "No Child Left Behind" requirements, at least 48 semester hours of college credit or pass a rigorous test to be administered through Region VII.

REPORTS TO:                     Principal, Supervising VI Teacher

JOB GOALS:                 

  1. Provide Braille embossed materials as determined by the VI teacher and classroom teacher to students with visual impairments to enable them to achieve and function successfully in the classroom setting.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Noncontractual (At-will); Clerical/Technical Paygrade   5 Estimated 185 days;  estimated 8 hours  daily;   Wage/hour status: nonexempt


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
 

  1.  

Utilize knowledge and skills from Braille Literary Transcribing Certification to transcribe materials including basic literary, foreign language, music, and Nemeth code rules.
  1.  

Transcribe materials including books, workbooks, testing material, and classroom work for students with visual impairments.
  1.  

Maintain accurate records of all transcriptions.
  1.  

Maintain a properly labeled disk file on all materials which should be retained for possible future multiple copies.
  1.  

Organize accurate time schedules for completing transcriptions as they are needed by classroom and VI teahcers.
  1.  

Make necessary adaptations of materials for students with visual impairments in conjunction with VI and classroom teacher.
  1.  

Provide adapted materials utilizing a variety of techniques, including tactile graphics, raised-line drawings, etc.
  1.  

Interline student brailled materials.
  1.  

Provide Braille output with a variety of Braille systems including Braille translation software, braillewriter, and embossers.
  1.  

Operate and maintain specialized equipment such as embossers, keyboarding equipment, electronic scanners, and personal computers.
  1.  

Order and maintain an inventory of supplies needed for performance of job duties.
  1.  

Work with students under the direction of VI professional to maximize students' independence.
  1.  

Assist the VI and campus staff with modifications and supplemental services necessary for the education of students with visual impairments.
  1.  

Acquire and implement any necessary updates in computer technology as it applies to braille production.
  1.  

Participate in professional development opportunities to advance Braille skills. This may include participation in additional Braille programs offered by the National Library Service, Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, and Region 7 ESC.

Complies with directions and instructions from supervisor and performs other tasks and assumes such responsibilities as may be assigned.

Maintains positive and cooperative working relationships with colleagues and others in the conduct of district business and demonstrates team work in daily activities.

Is prompt and timely in completing assignments and attending to details accurately and efficiently.

EQUIPMENT USED: 

Uses computer, typewriter, printer, copier, FAX, calculator, and telephone. 

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

Mental Demands: Reading, ability to communicate in English effectively (verbal and written) and to sign appropriately; ability to perform basic arithmetic; maintain emotional control under stress.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:  Prolonged use of computer, works with frequent interruptions, heavy lifting of volumes of Braille books and/or large print textbooks.
