767 - INTERPRETER, CERTIFIED LEVEL I


QUALIFICATIONS:        

  1. High School Diploma or GED

  2. Texas Commission for the Deaf (TCD) or Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID); Level I Keyboarding and computer proficiency

  3. Desire and ability to work with and communicate effectively with staff, students, and parents.

  4. To comply with the "No Child Left Behind" requirements, at least 48 semester hours of college credit or pass a rigorous test to be administered through Region VII.

REPORTS TO:                     Lead Interpreter, RDSPD Consultant, Principal

JOB GOALS:                 

  1. To help all hearing impaired children achieve and function successfully in a mainstream setting; thereby allowing them to develop into mature, able, and responsible adults.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Noncontractual (At-will); Clerical/Technical Paygrade   5 Estimated 185 days;  estimated 8 hours  daily;   Wage/hour status: nonexempt


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
 

  1.  

Interprets for mainstream hearing impaired students on a daily basis.

  1.  

Demonstrates fluency in three different sign languages:  American Sign Language ASL), Pidgin Signed English (PSE), and exact English; meets varying language needs of students.

  1.  

Interprets for assemblies, movies, and guest speakers.       

  1.  

Interprets for staff and faculty meetings for deaf professionals.

  1.  

Interprets for students before and after school for extracurricular activities.

  1.  

Is prepared with appropriate signs for special instructional vocabulary.

  1.  

Signs and finger spells precisely and clearly.   

  1.  

Maintains confidentiality under the terms set forth in the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.

  1.  

Accompanies hearing impaired students on all field trips and interprets, if necessary.

  1.  

Guides independent study work assigned by mainstream teachers.                                          

  1.  

Rewords and explains information presented by teacher when it is not understood by students, due to language deficiencies.

  1.  

Rewrites tests to meet language level of mainstream students.  

  1.  

Creates and provides written tutorials for tests.  

  1.  

Meets with students, as requested by students or mainstream teachers, to provide tutorial in subject areas requiring remediation and to prepare students for upcoming tests.

  1.  

Is alert to possible emergency situations that might arise in the classroom; is aware of the best possible means of protecting the well being of the student.

  1.  

Assists the deaf education and/or mainstream teachers in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.

  1.  

Informs mainstream teacher of basic special needs of hearing impaired students.

  1.  

Attends weekly sign language classes provided at elementary and middle school campuses to improve sign skills and coordinate signs district wide.

  1.  

Attends special sign classes, as necessary, to learn new sign systems.

  1.  

Participates in in-service training programs.

  1.  

Strive to obtain current certification level and to attain a state required certification level higher  than currently possesses.

  1.  

Complies with directions and instructions from supervisor and performs other tasks and assumes such responsibilities as related to the position and may be assigned.

  1.  

Maintains positive and cooperative working relationships with colleagues  and others in the conduct of district business and demonstrates team work in daily activities.

  1.  

Is prompt and timely in completing assignments and attending to details accurately and efficiently.

  1.  

Has regular attendance and complies with notification procedures for absences.

  1.  

Provides complete and accurate information in the conduct of district business.

  1.  

Maintains confidentiality in the conduct of district business.

  1.  

Complies with district policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations.

  1.  

Adheres to the district’s safety policies and procedures.

Participates in professional development programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.

If applicable, input, verify, or update PEIMS information as assigned by supervisor.

Actively follows district plan in obtaining state certification.


EQUIPMENT USED: 

Uses computer, typewriter, printer, copier, FAX, calculator, and telephone. 

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

Mental Demands: Reading, ability to communicate in English effectively (verbal and written) and to sign appropriately; ability to perform basic arithmetic; maintain emotional control under stress.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:  Repetitive hand motions;  works with many interruptions in many different settings.
