745 COMMUNITY SPECIALIST, Bilingual/ESL


QUALIFICATIONS:        

  1. High School Diploma or GED

  2. To comply with the "No Child Left Behind" requirements, at least 48 semester hours of college credit or pass a rigorous test to be administered through Region VII.

  3. Keyboarding and computer proficiency

  4. Computational, organizational, and communication skills

  5. Fluent in English and  Spanish

REPORTS TO:                                    Director, Bilingual/ESL

JOB GOALS:

  1.  To serve as the liaison for Limited English Proficiency (LEP) students between home, school, and community by assisting with problems in the student’s environment that affect his/her  adjustment and success in school.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Noncontractual (At-will);  Paygrade 3   Estimated 195. days;   estimated 8 hours  daily Wage/hour status:  Non-exempt


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
 

  1.  

Administer oral language proficiency test to all students on non-bilingual campuses who have a  home language survey other than English        .

  1.  

Prepare bilingual documentation folders for all students on non-bilingual campuses who have a home language survey other than English.

  1.  

Represent the bilingual department at Language Proficiency Assessment Committee (LPAC) meetings. 

  1.  

Assist the special education department by serving as translator at the Admission, Referral, and dismissal (ARD) meetings where parents do not speak English.

  1.  

Assist the special education department by making home visits to parents who do not speak
 English in order to explain forms and obtain signatures and/or other pertinent information.

  1.  

Assist parents of Limited English Proficiency (LEP) students by taking them to appointments with doctors, dentists, or optometrists and serving as a translator.

  1.  

Assist parents of LEP students by taking them to community organizations (PATH, etc.), to obtain assistance.

  1.  

Assist the visiting teachers by making home visits with them and serving as a translator.

  1.  

Assist non-bilingual campuses with enrollments of students whose parents do not speak English.

  1.  

Assist the transportation department when problems arise on one of the bilingual buses.

  1.  

Assist food services department by contacting non-English speaking parents to obtain correct documentation for lunch applications.

  1.  

Assist principals, instructional consultants, teachers, nurses, and other support personnel regarding attendance and the instructional, social, emotional, and physical needs of LEP students as they affect their adjustment to school and their  performance in. school.

  1.  

Assist non-bilingual schools by translating their forms into Spanish.

  1.  

Assist Head Start with test training.    

  1.  

Attend community meetings during/after school hours, interpreting for non-English speaking parents and representing the Bilingual department.

  1.  

 Assist all departments by translating material into Spanish.

  1.  

Complies with directions and instructions from supervisor and performs other tasks and assumes such responsibilities as related to the position and assigned.

  1.  

Maintains positive and cooperative working relationships with colleagues and others in the
conduct of district business and demonstrates team work in daily activities.

  1.  

Is prompt and timely in completing assignments and attending to details accurately and efficiently.

  1.  

Is regular in attendance and complies with notification procedures for absences.

  1.  

Provides complete and accurate information in the conduct of district business.

  1.  

Maintains confidentiality in the conduct of district business.

Complies with district policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations.

Participates in staff development training programs to improve job performance.

Participates in faculty meetings and special events as assigned.

EQUIPMENT USED:

Uses computer, typewriter, printer, copier, FAX, calculator, and telephone.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Mental Demands: Reading, ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); in English and Spanish; ability to perform basic arithmetic; maintain emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions.

 

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:  Repetitive hand motions; prolonged use of computer terminal; occasionally lifting heavy boxes; works with frequent interruptions.
