741 A Head Start Special Education Classroom Assistant


        

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High school diploma or GED;

  2. To comply with the "No Child Left Behind" requirements, at least 48 semester hours of college credit or pass a rigorous test to be administered through Region VII.

  3. Experience working with students.

  4. Ability to work with children with disabilities.

  5. Desire and ability to work with and communicate effectively with staff, students, and parents.

  6. Keyboarding and computer proficiency

REPORTS TO:             Head Start Director

JOB GOALS:   

  1. To assist the teacher establish student self-esteem, socialization, and life skills.

  2. To maintain a positive relationship between parents and school personnel.     


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Noncontractual (At-will); Clerical/Technical;   Paygrade 2; Estimated 185 days;estimated 4, 6, or 8 hours daily; wage/hour: nonexempt


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
 

 
  1.  

Assist students with physical disabilities according to their needs, including transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting, or positioning.

 
  1.  

Assist students with physical needs and personal care including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene.

 
  1.  

Help manage behavior or students.  This includes intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous student behavior as needed.

 
  1.  

Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.

 
  1.  

Work with individual students or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher.

 
  1.  

Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom.  This includes lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.

 
  1.  

Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.

 
  1.  

Help the teacher prepare instructional materials and classroom displays.

 
  1.  

Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom..

 
  1.  

Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.

 
  1.  

Help teacher keep administrative records and prepare required reports.

 
  1.  

Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.

 
  1.  

Assist student in regular classes, when assigned.

 
  1.  

Nebulizer treatments.

 
  1.  

Minor emergencies

 
  1.  

Complies with directions and instructions from supervisor and performs other tasks and assumes such responsibilities as may be assigned.

 
  1.  

Maintains positive and cooperative working relationships with colleagues and others in the conduct of district business; demonstrates teamwork in daily activities.

Is prompt, timely, and thorough in completing assignments and attending to details accurately and efficiently.

Is regular in attendance and complies with notification procedure for absences.

EQUIPMENT USED:

Wheelchair lift, wheelchairs, standing frames, walkers, Rifton chairs, scooter boards, adaptive tricycles, sitting apparatus, ramps; computer, copier, typewriter, paper cutter, Ellison die machine, audiovisual equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental factors:  Maintain emotional control under stress.  Frequent standing; stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing and pulling; regular heavy lifting of students.  Biological exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases.
