708 Head Start Instructional Assistant


QUALIFICATIONS:        

  1. Be a high school graduate or hold a GED certificate;

  2. Have experience related to working with students or parents;

  3. Keyboarding and computer proficiency, with general office experience, preferred

  4. Desire and ability to work with and effectively communicate with staff, students, and parents.

  5. To comply with the "No Child Left Behind" requirements, at least 48 semester hours of college credit or

    pass a rigorous test to be administered through Region VII.

REPORTS TO:          Head Start Director           

JOB GOALS:                 

  1. To assist teachers in their efforts to provide meaningful experiences for  students in the instructional area and through the use of resource materials.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Noncontractual (At-will); Clerical/Technical Paygrade 1 Estimated 185  days;   estimated 8 hrs daily Wage/hour status:  nonexempt


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
 

  1.  

Receive students in the cafeteria each morning.

  1.  

Line students up and be sure each one has a napkin, fork, and straw.

  1.  

Responsible for all students getting to their classrooms.

  1.  

Assist with tooth brushing.

  1.  

Be sure students wash hands and use restroom before class.

  1.  

Assist with pledge, weather chart, day and month, marching song.

  1.  

Assist with changing bulletin boards.

  1.  

Assist with art projects.

  1.  

Reproduction and distribution of materials.

  1.  

Work one-on-one with students having difficulties with skills that have been taught.

  1.  

Assist students in cutting out materials.

  1.  

Read books and tell stories.

  1.  

Operate filmstrip machine, recorder, record player, etc.

  1.  

Demonstrate special talents or hobbies.

  1.  

Instruct students how to prepare a dish from the basic food group.

  1.  

Assist students in the mixing of ingredients.

  1.  

Responsible for taking students out for recess.

  1.  

Instruct students of rules in each game played.

  1.  

Assist students in exercising.

  1.  

Instruct and reinforce students in safely using playground equipment.

  1.  

Assign each student to a sleeping post.

  1.  

Put down all bedding.

  1.  

Make name tags for students to wear.

  1.  

Assist in maintaining control of students while on the trip.

  1.  

Assist in return bus trip for students to campus.

  1.  

Teach children to tie shoes.

  1.  

Help care for animals kept in the classroom.

  1.  

Assist with emergencies, sickness, lost items, etc.

  1.  

Help children plant and care for a garden.

  1.  

Help supervise woodworking, water play, sand play, etc.

  1.  

Complies with directions and instructions from supervisor and performs other tasks and assumes responsibilities as may be assigned.

  1.  

Maintains positive and cooperative working relationships with colleagues and others in the conduct of district business and demonstrates team work in daily activities.

  1.  

Is prompt, timely, and thorough in completing assignments and attending to details accurately and efficiently.

  1.  

Meets attendance standards and complies with notification procedures for absences.

  1.  

Provides complete and accurate information in the conduct of district business.

  1.  

Maintains confidentiality regarding personnel matters in the conduct of district business.

  1.  

Complies with district policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations.

  1.  

Adheres to the district’s safety policies and procedures.

  1.  

Participates in staff development training programs to improve job performance.

  1.  

Participates in faculty meetings and special events as assigned.

EQUIPMENT: Typewriter, computer, copy machine, film strip, recorder

WORKING CONDITIONS: Mental Demands:  Reading; ability to communicate effectively (verbal); maintain emotional control under stress.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:  Moderate standing, stooping, bending, and lifting.
