704 English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructional


 

QUALIFICATIONS:        

  1. Be a high school graduate or hold a GED certificate;

  2. Have experience related to working with students or parents;

  3. Ability to write and speak fluently in Spanish and English;

  4. Keyboarding and computer proficiency preferred.

  5. To comply with the "No Child Left Behind" requirements, at least 48 semester hours of college credit or pass a rigorous test to be administered through Region VII.

JOB GOALS:                 

  1. Assist teachers and other staff with ESL classes

  2. Translate as needed


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Noncontractual (At-will); Clerical/Technical Paygrade 1    Estimated 185   days;   estimated 8 hrs daily   Wage/hour status:  nonexempt


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
 

  1.  

Test students in English and Spanish.

  1.  

Assist in maintaining accurate ESL records.

  1.  

Assist teachers with copying, transparencies, roll, grading papers, records in grade book, and report cards.

  1.  

Translate verbal and written Spanish/English whenever needed in office, including letters.

  1.  

Call parents as required.

  1.  

Make home visits as needed.

  1.  

Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.

  1.  

Assist individual students or small groups with homework, class work, and tutorial in morning and afternoon.

  1.  

Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.

  1.  

Assist students by translating whenever needed in classroom, attendance office, principals office, nurses office, etc.

  1.  

Notify students of need for required immunization.

  1.  

Translate in the office for student discipline and other situations as needed.

  1.  

Assist in nurse’s office, counselor’s office, etc., as required.

  1.  

Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside classroom.  This includes lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.

  1.  

Complies with directions and instructions from supervisor and performs other tasks and assumes such responsibilities as may be assigned.

Maintains positive and cooperative working relationships with colleagues and others in the conduct of district business and demonstrates team work in daily activities.

  1.  

Is prompt, timely, and thorough in completing assignments and attending to details accurately and efficiently.

  1.  

Meets attendance standards and complies with notification procedures for absences.

  1.  

Provides complete and accurate information in the conduct of district business.

  1.  

Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance.

  1.  

Participate in faculty meetings and special events as assigned.

  1.  

Maintains confidentiality in the conduct of district business.

  1.  

Complies with district policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations.

  1.  

Adheres to the district’s safety policies and procedures.

Participates in staff development training programs to improve job performance.

Participates in faculty meetings and special events as assigned.

EQUIPMENT USED: Uses copier, personal computer, typewriter, and audiovisual equipment. 

WORKING CONDITIONS: Mental Demands:  Reading (English and Spanish); ability to communicate effectively (verbal); maintain emotional control under stress.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:  Moderate standing, stooping, bending, and lifting.
