700 - Bilingual Instructional Assistant


QUALIFICATIONS:        

                                                1.  Be a high school graduate or hold a GED certificate;

                                                2.  Have experience related to working with students or parents;

                                                3.  Have a desire and ability to work with and communicate with

                                                     staff, students, and parents;

                                                4.  Oral and written fluency in  Spanish and English;

                                                5.  Keyboarding and computer proficiency preferred.  

                                                6.  To comply with the "No Child Left Behind" requirements, at least 48 semester

                                                     hours of college credit or pass a rigorous test to be administered through Region VII.

JOB GOALS:                            1.  Assist bilingual teachers with instruction of assigned students

                                                2.  Translate as required


 TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Noncontractual (At-will); Clerical/Technical Paygrade 1; Estimated  185  days;   estimated 8 hours daily  Wage/hour status:  nonexempt


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
 

  1.  

Translates for parents, teachers, and students in person and on the telephone.

  1.  

Translates letters, notes, and memos.

  1.  

Performs clerical duties, including the need for both languages.

  1.  

Assist in class of non-English speaking children; provide individualized instruction and reinforcement in Spanish and/or English as appropriate.

  1.  

Assist in reading, phonics, and mathematics in Spanish and/or English as appropriate, under the teacher’s supervision.

  1.  

Assist teacher with English as a Second Language (ESL) strategies.

  1.  

Prepare instruction material.

  1.  

Relieve teacher temporarily, as needed.

  1.  

Assist children to leave the campus properly.

  1.  

Supervise children in playground activities.

  1.  

Provide activities in groups and centers.

  1.  

Assist in office, Keyboarding letters, duplicating materials, laminating material for teachers, requested.

  1.  

Complies with directions and instructions from supervisor and performs other tasks and assumes  such responsibilities a may be assigned.

  1.  

Maintains positive and cooperative working relationships with colleagues and others in the conduct of district business and demonstrates team work in daily activities.

  1.  

Is prompt, timely, and thorough in completing assignments and attending to details accurately and efficiently.

  1.  

Meets attendance standards and complies with notification procedures for absences.

  1.  

Provides complete and accurate information in the conduct of district business.

  1.  

Maintains confidentiality in the conduct of district business.

Complies with district policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations.

Adheres to the district’s safety policies and procedures.

Participates in staff development training programs to improve job performance.

Participates in faculty meetings and special events as assigned.

EQUIPMENT USED: Copier, computer, laminating machine, typewriter, and audiovisual equipment

WORKING CONDITIONS: Mental Demands: Reading, in Spanish and English; ability to communicate effectively in both English and Spanish (verbal and written); maintain emotional control under stress

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Moderate standing, stooping, bending, and lifting.
