852 APPRENTICE MECHANIC


QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  1. High school diploma or GED

  2. A valid Texas CDL with bus driver certification.

  3. Pass annual TEA/DOT physical

  4. State vehicle inspection certification

  5. Acceptable driving/criminal history record.

  6. Willingness to work occasional overtime.

 

REPORTS TO:        COORDINATOR OF BUS SHOP AND LEAD MECHANIC SHOP FOREMAN

JOB GOALS:

  1. To assist in the maintenance of department vehicles at maximum efficiency levels. 

  2. To assist with accurate recording of all repairs, parts, and other services.

  3. To assist supervisors in accomplishing department goals.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Noncontractual (At-will); Manual/Trades Paygrade: 4; Estimated 226 days; estimated 8 hours daily



MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  1.  

Maintains personal skills at the level required to perform major repairs on all department vehicles and vehicle components with little or no supervision.

  1.  

Accurately performs major vehicle and component repairs as directed by the Bus Shop Coordinator.

  1.  

Follows the daily work schedule and makes good use of time.

  1.  

Performs needed minor repairs and adjustments during periodic vehicle inspections and makes suggestions to the Bus Shop Coordinator when major repairs are indicated by the supervisor.

  1.  

Accurately diagnoses mechanical problems.

  1.  

Maintains a personal tool set commensurate with job requirements.

  1.  

Attends required refresher workshops and safety meetings.

  1.  

Maintains a clean, safe and uncluttered work space.

  1.  

Observes and enforces safety standards.

  1.  

Minimizes road-call down time by accurately diagnosing problems and performing needed repairs without delay.

  1.  

Replaces parts used from service truck inventories as soon as possible.

  1.  

Assists drivers in the transfer of students to a relief bus and in getting the route back in service when justified by lengthy repairs.

  1.  

Records all relevant information repair orders in a readable fashion.

  1.  

Maintains personal qualifications for driving school buses.

  1.  

Acts as substitute bus driver or monitor, when required.

  1.  

Complies with directions and instructions from Supervisor and performs other tasks and assumes such responsibilities as may be assigned.

Maintains positive and cooperative working relationships with colleagues and others in the conduct of district business and demonstrates teamwork in daily activities.

  1.  

Is prompt, timely and thorough in completing assignments and attending to details accurately and efficiently.

  1.  

Meets attendance standards and complies with notification procedures for absences.

  1.  

Provides complete and accurate information in the conduct of district business.

  1.  

Maintains confidentiality in the conduct of district business.

Complies with district policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations.

EQUIPMENT USED:

Standard shop equipment; operates school bus, fuel monitoring system, and computer.

Mental Demands:

Reading; ability to understand verbal instructions; maintain emotional control under stress; ability to maintain effective control over group of students when necessary and appropriate. 

Physical Demands/Environment Factors:

Must possess good physical dexterity and have the ability to perform manual tasks and body movement.  Work outside and inside; exposure to hot and cold temperatures; exposure to dust, toxic chemicals, and vehicle fumes; physical capacity to handle large tires and wheels.
