

Stewart
Middle School recently held its annual NJHS
induction ceremony. Students, faculty, parents and
grand-parents were there to support and grace the
occasion as officers and inductees walked the stage, lit
the candles and said the NJHS pledge.


Nine students at Robert E. Lee High
School were among the 50,000 highest scoring
participants of 1.5 million students who took the 2007
Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying
Test. These students have now met requirements to enter
the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Fourteen Hubbard Middle School
students participated in the Duke Talent Search.

special banquet recognizing their outstanding
accomplishment.
Congratulations to Hubbard Middle
School student Meredith Oliver. She received a first
place art medal and a $750.00 scholarship for her pencil
drawing at the Academic Rodeo.
Hubbard Middle School student,
Blake Eubanks, won an individual contest with the Smith
County Art Contest. He won a $50.00 Savings Bond. The
theme was Safety in Our Environment.
The 6th, 7th
, and 8th Industrial Technology students have
also been busy learning about aerodynamics and
understanding how airplanes fly. The students
constructed their own Styrofoam airplanes and had a
flying contest with the help of the Civil Air Patrol.
The students were judged by design, workmanship, and
distance. The results are as follows:

The Color Guard from Robert E. Lee
High School competed at the MA National Competition
in Fort Worth Texas in several different categories.
In the Ensemble division senior Allison Hughes, senior
Kaylee Garvey and junior Chelsea Thompson received 2nd
place overall, along with a superior rating.
The ensemble of senior Allison Hughes, junior Haleigh
Mosley, sophomores Lexxy LeBlanc, Cayla Thompson and
junior Cheyenne Johnson received a Superior Rating on
their small ensemble.
In the Solo division juniors Chelsea Thompson and
Haleigh Mosley both received Superior ratings on their
individual solos. Sophomore Lexxy LeBlanc also received
a Superior rating on her solo.
In the Color Guard Team division the Tyler Lee Color
Guard received a Superior rating, along with receiving
4th place overall in the Color Guard Team division.
Dixie Elementary students raised
$1,599.52 in support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma
Society’s "Pasta for Pennies" campaign. These funds will
be used towards research and new treatments to help
those fighting leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and
myeloma.

Tyler ISD Students Receive Awards from
the Tyler Museum of Art
Students at Robert E. Lee and John Tyler High Schools
were awarded the Merit of Honor in the Tyler Museum of
Art 4th Annual High School Art Exhibition.
Martin Reina of Robert E. Lee High School, and Arnold
Mateos and Melissa Weber of John Tyler High School
received awards recognizing their work as the most
outstanding in the exhibition during the show’s opening
reception and ceremony in March.
Reina, among the field of Robert E. Lee students
representing the art classes of Linda East and Linda
Keane, was awarded the Merit of Honor for Fish, a
representational piece rendered in Prisma colors on
paper.
Mateos and Ms. Weber, students from the John Tyler art
classes of Marilyn Coler and Steve Fuqua, round out the
list of Merit of Honor recipients. Mateos received the
award for his pencil portrait on paper, What Are You
Looking At? Ms. Weber was recognized for Under Pressure,
a conceptual piece rendered in airbrush on paper.
Each student who received individual honors was awarded
a Merit of Honor certificate from the Tyler Museum of
Art, as well as a gift certificate for supplies from
Dick Blick Art Materials. Each student whose work was
selected for the exhibition received a certificate of
participation and a one-year student membership to the
Tyler Museum of Art.
In addition to the above honorees each school had
representative artists participating in the 4th Annual
High School Art Exhibition:

Seventh grade Middle
Years Programme students of Hubbard Middle School
visited numerous places during an "Exploring Texas"
field trip. Attractions visited include: UT Campus, UT
Natural Science Museum, State Capitol, Bob Bullock
Museum, Inner Space Cavern and The Texas Ranger Hall of
Fame. Senator Kevin Eltife met students at the capitol.
Over
spring break twenty-three students from Moore Middle
School participated in the “Laying of the Wreath”
part of the “Changing of the Guard” ceremony at
Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C. Four
students dressed in their Sunday best were able to go
where few people get to go-- inside the chains that
surround the marching area that guards the Tomb of the
Unknown Soldiers. These students placed a wreath
honoring the fallen soldiers. After the laying wreath
at the Tomb of the Unknown, the students then went to
the Memorial for the Columbia where another wreath was
placed.

Angela Frost, a John Tyler High School student,
has been named a Gates Millennium Scholarship Finalist.
CONGRATULATIONS!
Fourteen students from Moore Middle School
participated in the Kilgore Regional Science Fair on
March 6th. The winners were sixth
graders Caroline Thompson, who won an Award of
Excellence from the Association of Women Geoscientists,
and $25 for her superb use of the scientific method;
Maria Chroneos won the Young Scientist Award, 3rd
place in Physical Science, and a berth in the Texas
State Science Fair in April in San Antonio! Other
participants were Sean Koch, Antonio Valtierras, Brandon
Majors, Macy McCombs, Laura Brown, Emily Hawk, Morgan
Mills, Seth Oldham, Claire Whitney, Aaron Cromartie,
Naina Baines, and Ryan Rendon.
In addition, former Moore Mustang Jessica Emery placed 2nd
in the Senior Division of Physical Science, and she will
be defending her state title in San Antonio.

The John Tyler Color Guard received a Superior
rating at the Marching Auxiliaries Regional
Competition. The color guard will advance to compete at
the Marching Auxiliaries National Competition March 29,
2008 in Ft. Worth.

Academic Challenge Quiz Team Takes Top Honors
The team finished the tournament undefeated, bringing
home the East Texas State Championship for the second
time in four years. Moore defeated Hubbard Middle
School, along with Edgewood Middle School, Arp Junior
High School, 2007 Champion Malakoff Middle School, and
Palestine Middle School in a double elimination format
tournament spanning several days.
The team consists of 8th graders Marina Martinez
(captain), Jack Jamison, and 7th graders Austin
Chambers, and Alex Frazier. Alex and Austin will return
next year to continue the winning tradition at Moore.
The ACQ Team has placed third or higher (with two
championships) the last five years in a row. No other
team in the East Texas area has equaled that feat. The
team coach is Dr. Jerry Frazier, 8th grade US History
and AVID teacher.

All of the Moore students that participated did an
amazing job of representing their school in their
academics, dedication and behavior.
Twenty-four
students from Moore Middle School participated in
the TJC Science Fair on February 27th. Students competed
and excelled in the areas of Physical Science and
Biology. In Physical Science, Naina Baines and Macy
McCombs took 2nd Place while Laura Brown and Sean Koch
earned a 3rd place medal. In Biology, Aaron Cromartie
took 1st Place honors! In addition, the following
students will be joining the winners in Kilgore for the
next level of science fair competition at the Regional
Science Fair Meet: Maria Chroneos, Ryan Rendon, Brandon
Majors, Zachary Lawson, Caroline Thompson, Antonio
Valtierra, Claire Whitney, Emily Hawk, Seth Oldham, and
Morgan Mills.

School participated in the Longview/Tyler UIL
One-Act Play Competition at John Tyler High School. The
cast and crew of "The Open Window" gave an exceptional
performance and walked away with three special awards.
The first went to 8th grader Austin Bell, who received
an Honorable Mention Medal for his role as Frampton
Nuttel. Austin pulled off this award-winning
performance after joining the cast a mere two weeks
before they were to compete in the event. Sixth grader,
Vivian Villapudua made a stunning performance as the
young and very British, Vera Sappleton. For her
performance, Vivian away earned a medal for All-Star
Cast. Seventh grader, Melysan Walker, received an award
for her role as Stage Manager for the play.

The team finished in third place at the regional
competition. They will be advance to the state
competition on Friday, March 28 in Austin. The team
members are Cole Paxson, Erika Skeele, Anish Patel, and
Sarah Hollis.
Mahmoud El-Kishkey placed 4th in the individual
competition and will also be attending the state meet.
Hubbard was the only public school to advance to state
from this region.
