TISD Foundation Introduces Named Grant Program

Many classroom teachers incorporate unique educational tools into lessons so they not only enhance the curriculum, but also challenge and entertain students.  Each year, the Tyler ISD Foundation provides grants to these deserving public school teachers.  Now, the community is invited to unite with the Foundation and provide financial support to Tyler Independent School District.

Area businesses, organizations, service clubs, churches and other entities are invited to be a Named Grant honoree with a $1200 contribution to the Tyler ISD Foundation.

Each year, the Tyler ISD Foundation provides resources for teachers to explore innovative teaching techniques and develop classroom projects.  Funding is also available for campus-wide projects that educate or involve parents to facilitate their active participation in their child’s education.

One example of this unique partnership is the success of this past academic year’s Named Grant Honoree:  East Texas Professional Credit Union.

“It is our privilege to participate in the Tyler ISD Foundation Named Grant program,” says Janice Crews, Marketing Director for East Texas Professional Credit Union.  “We extend our utmost appreciation to all those involved in the education of our children and are honored to provide this token of gratitude.”

Funds donated by East Texas Professional Credit Union were awarded through the Education and Involvement Grant to Bell Elementary Global Communications Academy teacher, Sharon Martin.  The grant was used to purchase the “Math + Games = Learning Success!” program.  This program utilizes friendly competition through a game format and requires players to use Mathematical problem solving skills to answer questions.  Credit Union representatives, along with Tyler ISD Foundation members, were invited to experience the program hands-on with the students at Bell Elementary.

After Crews visited the campus she commented, “It was very fulfilling to see the students interacting with each other through games while learning vital Math skills that will be used everyday.  It was also inspiring to see students quickly offer helpful hints when another student struggled with an answer.”

Any organization or business can create a Teacher Grant and have the grant named in their honor.  The organization or business contributes $1200 which includes one teacher grant and all the management fees associated with the administration of the grant.  The Foundation acknowledges the gift and administers the grant.  The donors are invited to on-site visits to see how their grant is affecting the classroom.  Public acknowledgement is made at the Donor Recognition Luncheon hosted annually by the Foundation.

“So often, a donor may feel that their charitable gift is lost in the mix,” said TISD Foundation Executive Director Larry Goddard.  “This program allows the donor to know exactly where their contribution was used, by which teacher, in which classroom, and with which project.  This way, the donor is more connected to the beneficiary of their gift,”  Goddard said.
