Back to School for TISD Volunteers

The fall season means back to school for more than 17,000 Tyler Independent School District students.  At the same time, more than 700 community volunteers show up for their assignments throughout the school district as well.  Each year, volunteers register through the offices of the Tyler ISD Foundation.

“Volunteers provide hours of precious time, support to staff, encouragement and learning opportunities to students,” said Connie Moore, Andy Woods Elementary School principal.

Each campus, through the individual principals, has a campus coordinator for the Volunteer Connection.  Some of the activities that are performed by volunteers include tutoring, field trip assistance, preparation of materials and other duties needed by the classroom teachers.

“This is just another added value to serve the district that the Foundation provides,” said Larry Goddard, Executive Director of the Tyler ISD Foundation.  “Based on national labor statistics, the value of volunteer time is well over $17.00 per hour.  Given that value estimate, the 700 volunteers in Tyler public schools provide over $1 million value of service.”

Potential volunteers can initiate a partnership by submitting an application to the Tyler ISD Foundation Office.  Texas state-issued photo identification cards or Texas Driver’s Licenses are required as part of the application process.  For the protection of students, Tyler ISD requires persons who intend to serve as a school volunteer with the district to submit to a criminal history check.  Approved volunteers will be matched with the school or schools of their choice.  Volunteers are issued an identification badge to allow their presence on the assigned campuses.

Rosalyn Mallard, Tyler ISD Foundation Development Coordinator, is the contact for the volunteers in the district.  Applications are currently being accepted at the Tyler Independent School District Administration building Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.  The administration building is located at 1319 New Sunnybrook Drive, Tyler.
