Headline Four-Game Classic
Tyler – Two of the state’s premier quarterbacks will be on display in the third-annual Trinity Mother Frances Football Classic, which kicks off on Thursday night at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium in Tyler.
The four-game Trinity Mother Frances Football Classic opens in big fashion as Gilmer High School takes on Bishop Gorman High School, from Las Vegas (Nev.). In the first-ever meeting between Texas and Nevada high schools, kickoff on the opening night for Texas high school football will be 8 PM on August 31.
The state’s No. 1 in Class 3A, Gilmer features one of the state’s
top passing tandems in quarterback G.J. Kinne Jr. (who has offered a
verbal commitment to Baylor) and wide receiver Curtis Brown
(verbally committed to Texas). The Buckeyes and coach Jeff Traylor
have lost just one regular season game since the 2002 season and
have not lost a district game since 2000. Bishop Gorman has electrifying RB Corey White (who is considering Washington over UCLA and others) and talented offensive lineman Po'u Palelei. Bishop Gorman is coached by David White, who led the Gaels to a 9-2 mark last season before serving as an assistant coach for the West at the 2006 U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio last January.
In the second game, Tyler Lee High School will host Lake Highlands High School, which is located just northeast of Dallas, at 8 PM on Friday. Tyler Lee is 2-0 in the Trinity Mother Frances Football Classic.
The Red Raiders hope to return to the State Championship stage again after winning the 5A, Div. I title in 2004. Lee’s top players include Tekerrein Cuba, who is regarded as one of the top defensive backs in Texas, and wide receiver Jacob Amie (who has committed to Texas Tech.).
Lake Highlands will be starting the Scott Smith Era. Coach Smith arrived at Lake Highlands in late June after serving as defensive coordinator at Plano.
The doubleheader on Saturday begins with an exciting 4A battle: Forney High School playing nearby Whitehouse High School (10 AM kickoff), followed by John Tyler High School and Texas High School from Texarkana in the Classic finale at 8 PM.
Like John Tyler, Forney is building for its first State Championship
appearance since the 2000 season. Whitehouse features one of the top
two-way stars in East Texas in Luke Shivers. Rivals John Tyler and Texas High have split their two previous meetings in the Trinity Mother Frances Football Classic. The playmaker for Texas High is Ryan Mallett, who many media outlets regard as the nation’s premier high school quarterback in the Class of 2007. Mallett has verbally committed to the University of Michigan. John Tyler, which made a goal line stand to defeat Texas High in the closing seconds last August, counters with electrifying running back Kendall Hunter and massive offensive lineman Marquis Franklin.
Prior to the finale of the
Trinity Mother Frances Football Classic,
a dedication ceremony will be held for the naming of Earl Campbell
Field at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium. Campbell, who will
attend the ceremony with dozens of family members and friends, is a
1974 graduate of John Tyler HS. Reserved tickets at each of the eight schools competing in the event are good for all four games. Tickets, if available, may also be purchased for $10 each on game day at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium. For more information on purchasing tickets, please contact Sue Bland at 903-262-3080. The four-game, three-day Trinity Mother Frances Football Classic was created and is managed by TITUS Sports Marketing for the Tyler Independent School District.
