Prior to kickoff of the Texas High and John Tyler game, the Tyler Independent School District will honor John Tyler graduate Earl Campbell by naming the field at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium in his honor. Campbell will be joined by dozens of family and friends in the end zone ceremony, which begins at 7:30 PM. Gates will open at 6 PM.

“Earl Campbell is without a doubt the most successful and renowned student athlete in the history of Tyler Independent School District,” said TISD Superintendent David Simmons. “He is also a man of integrity and character, and I think it is very appropriate to formally and visibly honor his accomplishments at the high school, collegiate, and professional levels.”

The president and founder of Earl Campbell Meat Products, Inc., Campbell was born in Tyler on March 29, 1955. In his only full season at running back in high school, Campbell rushed for 2,224 yards in leading John Tyler to the 1973 Class 4A state championship. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1991, with 9,407 yards rushing, 806 yards receiving, 74 total touchdowns, and 10,213 total yards.
