TISD Students GEAR Up to be Medically Incredible

The Tyler GEAR UP program at John Tyler High School is providing a two-week summer enrichment program to students in the ninth and tenth grades who are interested in a career in the medical field.  The Medical Incredible Program runs Tuesday, June 9 through Friday, June 19, 2009, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at John Tyler High School, located at 1120 NNW Loop 323, in Tyler.

During the two-weeks, students will have hands-on lab activities and instruction followed by guest speakers and field trips.  Students will spend half of their day learning about the career of their choice in dental hygiene, nutrition, optometry, nursing, or physical therapy.  The other part of the day will include a field trip to expose the students to these choices of careers in action.  The program concludes with a two-day local exploration road trip, hosted by The University of Texas at Tyler, which includes a stop at the Mercy Ships Headquarters in Lindale, Texas.

Sponsored and supported by the University of Texas at Tyler, Tyler GEAR Up offers activities that lead to graduation and enrollment in post secondary education.  GEAR Up works to develop a culture of high expectations of success accompanied by a rigorous curriculum.

Tyler GEAR Up is in its fourth year and serves students at Boulter, Dogan, Hogg, and Stewart middle schools and John Tyler High School.  The Tyler GEAR Up project currently serves over 1,200 students and their parents at John Tyler High School.
