TISD Announces Valedictorians and Salutatorians for 2008-2009

The Tyler Independent School District is proud to announce the names of the students who have the highest and second highest academic rank in the 2009 graduating class.  Named Valedictorians of their high school are students Hien Nguyen from John Tyler High School and Mika Smith from Robert E. Lee High School.  Named Salutatorians of their high school are students Stefania Aldana from John Tyler High School and Ahmed El-Kishky from Robert E. Lee High School.

 

            Hien Nguyen, John Tyler Valedictorian, will attend the University of Texas at Tyler, majoring in pre-dentistry and pursue a career as a pediatric dentist.  She is the daughter of Hoang and Hoa Nguyen.

            Nguyen’s activities and awards include: John Tyler “Top Ten” Seniors; International Baccalaureate Student 9-11th grades; Advance Placement Student 12th grade; Young Woman Leadership Award; Most Outstanding Female Senior Rotarian Award; A Honor Rolls; Envirothon - Vice-President & Team Captain for Team A & Treasurer; National Honor Society  President & Treasurer; ETMC Junior Volunteer Scholarship Recipient; Asian Pacific Islander American Scholarship Semi-Finalist; Night of Shining Stars Top 20 Students for Tyler ISD; Community Service throughout East Texas (7 years); IB Student Organization: Class Representative 10-11th grades; Students Making a Change (SMAC): Treasurer; John Tyler Recycling Club Member; University Interscholastic League- Mathematics- Calculator Applications; Texas League of Women Voters- Debate: Supreme Court; and the East Texas Medical Center Ambassador for Junior Volunteers.

 

            Mika Smith, Robert E. Lee Valedictorian, will attend Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas, majoring in psychology and chemistry and pursue a career as a psychiatrist.  She is the daughter of Roger and Mary Lynn Smith.

 

            Smith’s activities and awards are: Marvin United Methodist Church Youth Group; Spanish Club; Varsity Softball Team; Technology Students Association Officer; Bible Club Worship Leader; Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society; National Honor Society Officer; AP Scholar; Freshman Orientation Leader; Technology Students Association 1st place at regional and state competition.

 

            Stefania Aldana, John Tyler Salutatorian, will attend Tyler Junior College majoring in Biology to become a diagnostic medical sonographer.  She is the daughter of Juan Francisco and Rosa Maria Aldana.

 

            Aldana’s activities and awards are: National Honor Society; International Baccalaureate Student 9th-11th grades; Family Consumer Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) President; FCCLA State Qualifier for 2 years; Envirothon Club; Recycling Club; Students Making A Change (SMAC); Advanced Placement Student; Community Service includes: Discovery Science Place, Air Force Band Concert, Salvation Army, The East Texas Food Bank, Reindeer Run; Top Ten Seniors; Senior Leadership Team; Presidential Scholarship to Tyler Junior College; Night of Shining Stars Top 20 Students for Tyler ISD; UIL Competition.

 

            Ahmed El-Kishky, Robert E. Lee Salutatorian, will attend The University of Tulsa in Tulsa, Oklahoma, majoring in mathematics and biology. He is the son of Hassan El-Kishky and Samia Khafagy.

            El-Kishky’s activities and awards are: National Honor Society; Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society; German Club; Health Occupations Student Association; UIL 1st place math-District; UIL 1st place number sense-District; UIL 3rd place science-District; UIL 5th place medical math-Regional; UIL 5th place computer science-District; Recognized by Tyler ISD for outstanding achievement in UIL.
