TISD Teachers Learn to Use Drama to Aid Instruction

Some Tyler ISD teachers will be in school during their Spring Break.  These teachers will be attending a workshop offered by the Tyler Civic Theater in Tyler on Tuesday, March 11, 2008.  This teacher workshop will use To Kill a Mockingbird as a demonstration of using drama as a teaching tool.

“Teachers can use these strategies to teach anything,” said George Faber, Tyler ISD Director of Visual and Performing Arts.  “It gives teachers a hands-on product that is engaging so the students become immersed.  It makes learning fun,” said Faber.

The group of teachers will learn teaching strategies such as role playing and drama games.  This session will include ties to social and historical values with the civil rights theme of the show.

“It is our hope that teachers will utilize this complimentary service program,” said Tyler Civic Theater Education Director DeAnna Hargrove.  “We want to introduce teachers to the concept of integrating dramatic productions as a tool to aid classroom instruction of  History/Social Studies; English/Literature; and Science/Math,” said Hargrove.

This is the pilot season for the Civic Theatre’s Teacher Events.
