TISD Students Collect Coins to Find Cure

Students at John Tyler High School are helping save lives by participating in the Pennies For Patients campaign benefiting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. For three weeks, students will bring in spare change to save the lives of people touched by blood cancers, such as leukemia, which strikes more children and young adults under the age of 20 than any other type of cancer.

The students at John Tyler realize the impact they can make towards achieving the school’s goal of raising $1,000. The John Tyler campus is half-way through the three week collection and has received over $500 in spare change. The campaign ends on February 22.

In 2006-2007, over $16 million was raised by schools throughout the country which participated in School & Youth Programs like Pennies For Patients. A record-breaking 650 schools in the North Texas area participated last year raising over $570,000. This year, the North Texas Chapter hopes to exceed that goal with the help of John Tyler High School, and many others collecting change for this service learning program endorsed by the Texas Association of Student Councils (TASC). Funds raised through these schools support the Society’s mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. This year, the goal is set at $600,000 and John Tyler is helping the North Texas Chapter reach that goal.
