TISD Teachers Learn New Teaching Skills At NASA

NASA has selected DeAnna Molloy and Loree Green of Hubbard Middle School in Tyler ISD to be two of 80 Texas Middle School Aerospace Scholars (MAS) as a MAS educator.  Molloy and Green will participate in a one-week summer session June 10 through June 15 at NASA’s Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston.  Molloy and Green will have access to NASA education specialists, flight directors, scientists and engineers who will talk about the latest technology being used in the space program.

MAS is a one-year professional development program for teachers and includes an opportunity for their students to participate in a series of distance learning events in their own schools. During the summer workshop, teachers develop an “action plan” outlining various ways to integrate NASA resources into the middle school curriculum throughout the school year.

As part of Texas Aerospace Scholars (TAS), MAS was created through a joint venture between JSC and the state of Texas to inspire students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The students of these teachers are also encouraged to participate in future educational opportunities such as High School Aerospace Scholars. Additional funding for TAS is received in part by Rotary NASA and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
