John Tyler High School Lock Down

At approximately 10:25 a.m. a male student reported to the John Tyler High School office that a female student might possibly be in possession of a handgun.

As per protocol, a high-level lock down was initiated and immediate search for the female student began. The female student was located on campus.

A subsequent search revealed that the student was in possession of an illegal knife.  The blade length was in excess of 5 1/2 inches.

The female student was taken into custody and charged with "Places Weapons Prohibited," a felony of the third degree, and transported to the Smith County Jail.

The lock down was officially lifted at 12:03 p.m. and normal campus operations resumed.

The safety of students and staff is a priority in Tyler ISD.  Each campus has a Campus Trauma Response team that is specifically trained on an annual basis as to what to do to help their campus when crisis situations arise.  Also, all schools practice lockdown, shelter-in-place, bad weather, and fire drills each year in an effort to keep the students knowledgeable when they are told to perform one of these responses.
