TISD Superintendent Selected for

Lead Role in Richardson

 

            The Board of Trustees of the Richardson Independent School District (RISD) has offered Dr. David Simmons, current superintendent of Tyler Independent School District, the superintendent role of this Dallas-area school system.


            “I have been blessed to be a part of the Tyler community,” said Tyler ISD Superintendent David Simmons.  “I am very proud of the progress we have made as a district, and I will leave hoping the staff believes I have positively contributed to the district and community.”  Simmons went on to say, “I want to thank the Board and the Tyler community for their support of me personally.”

Simmons has held the Superintendent position with Tyler ISD for more than four years.  Under his leadership, Tyler ISD has increased student performance on standardized tests, lowered the achievement gap, increased the number of students in advanced placement level courses, and passed the 2004 Bond Election.  The Tyler Board of Trustees was selected the 2005 State Honor Board of the Year by the Texas Association of School Administrators.

“The Tyler Independent School Board understands and supports Dr. Simmons’ right to make a decision on his career and future,” said Tyler ISD Board of Trustees President Andy Bergfeld.  “While I feel like Tyler is a great place to live and work, I 'm sure Dr. Simmons has thought through this decision and is doing what he feels is best for his family.  TISD has accomplished some great things under Dr. Simmons leadership and we fully intend to continue that progress in the future.  We wish him luck and look forward to hiring the best replacement in the state for his position.”

Tyler ISD will hold a special board meeting at noon on Friday, December 1, to consider the resignation of Simmons and to consider appointment of an interim superintendent.  Bergfeld said the board will need to consider in the near future the hiring of a search firm to identify a suitable successor.
