Board Approves Hiring of Professional Personnel

The Board of Trustees unanimously approved the hiring of two individuals for the following positions:

Director of Student Services
Tyler Independent School District Board of Trustees has named Jeff Collum, a Texas educator with 10 years of experience, to the new position of Director of Student Services.  Collum is currently a high school principal, grades 7 through 12, for Martins Mill ISD in Ben Wheeler, Texas.  He officially begins his duties July 1, 2008.

Jones Elementary Principal
The Board of Trustees named Patricia Lewis as the new principal for Jones Elementary MST Academy.  Lewis has 13 years of education experience.  Lewis currently serves as assistant principal at Bell Elementary Global Communications Academy.  She officially begins her duties July 1, 2008.
  
 
 

 

Board Recognizes Students and Schools

The Board of Trustees recognized the following students for special achievements:

Allie Smith, a student at John Tyler High School, as a state champion artist. She recently competed at the State Visual Arts Scholastic Event competition in Houston where her sculpture received the highest rating of “4” and a state medal.

 

The Robert E. Lee Color Guard competed recently at the Marching

Auxiliary National Competition in Forth Worth in several different categories. In the Ensemble Division, the ensemble of senior Allison Hughes, senior Kaylee Garvey, and junior Chelsea Thompson, received 2nd place overall, along with a Superior rating. The ensemble of senior Allison Hughes, junior Haleigh Mosley, sophomores Lexxy LeBlanc, Cayla Thompson and junior Cheyenne Johnson received a Superior rating on their ensemble. In the Solo division juniors Chelsea Thompson and Haleigh Mosley both received Superior ratings on their individual solos. Sophomore Lexxy LeBlanc also received a Superior rating on her solo.  In the Color Guard Team division the Robert E. Lee Color Guard received a Superior rating, along with receiving 4th place overall in the Color Guard Team division. Congratulations ladies for your hard work!

 

Thornell Lewis for her participation in the Congressional Youth Leadership Council Conference held in Washington, D.C. this spring. Ms. Lewis was nominated by her teacher, Lisa Harper, for many reasons. Ms. Lewis is extremely involved at John Tyler. She is a member of student council, a cheerleader, is involved in Lions for Christ, and has shown great potential for leadership on the John Tyler campus. This young lady represents Tyler ISD proudly.  Congratulations Thornell Lewis.

 

Robert E. Lee Computer Science Team, for placing first in the District UIL team competition in Longview. Winners in the Individual Competition include Eric Cousineau for 1st place, Jeff Parks for 3rd place, Darren Hampton for 5th Place, and Ahmed el-Kishky for 6th  place. Congratulations!  This is the 4th consecutive year Eric Cousineau placed first in the District.

 

Austin Chambers, a student at Moore MST Magnet School has been selected to travel to the Austin area as a participant in Education in Action's Lone Star Leadership Academy, this summer. His selection for the academy was based on his academics, leadership ability, and his involvement in school and community activities. Mr. Chambers was nominated for the honor by his teacher Jay Powell.  Mr. Chambers was recently elected as the student council president for the upcoming 2008-2009 school year. 

 

Board Authorizes and Accepts Donations

The Board of Trustees authorized and approved the acceptance of the following donations totaling $ 32,466.61:

 

$10,956.00 from Owens PTA to Owens Elementary for technology

$10,000.00 from Tyler ISD Foundation to Tyler ISD for Teacher of the Year support

$11,510.61 from Caldwell PTA to Caldwell Elementary for technology
