Board Approves Amended 2007-2008 Calendar

The Board of Trustees unanimously approved the amended 2007-2008 calendar as proposed by the Tyler ISD District Education Improvement Council.  This amended calendar will ensure that Memorial Day remains a district holiday that cannot be changed by weather events for the 2007-2008 school year.

Board Approves High School Library Improvements

The Board of Trustees approved the purchase of furniture, equipment, and upgrades to the John Tyler and Robert E. Lee libraries in the amount of $183,900.  The facility needs of the high school libraries are based upon the priority for the preparation needed of Tyler ISD students for post-secondary education. Both high schools need updated media access, circulation desks, monitoring of student access and security, and furniture for reading areas. The additional needs at Robert E. Lee include updated shelving, painting, and computers. John Tyler also needs motorized blinds to prevent the fading of books from the overhead windows.

Board Approves Reading Plan of Action

The Board of Trustees approved the Reading Plan of Action for 2007-2008 including the purchase of materials for $110,000 to student achievement in reading and other content areas.  This plan also incorporates a coordinated effort with both bilingual and library services to provide a consistent approach to student achievement in reading.

Facilities Department Provides Update on School Construction Projects

Project Manager Randy Rayford, with The Staubach Company, provided the Board of Trustees an update on the progress of the school construction projects.

Four elementary schools are under construction at this time (Austin, Bonner, Douglas and Peete):

Austin is on schedule except for the electrical which is approximately one week behind;

Bonner is on schedule;

Douglas is on schedule.

All three schools are scheduled to be complete June 30 with the punch out phase of the buildings are underway.  The exterior work is slightly behind due to rain.  This includes paving, courtyard, irrigation, landscaping, fencing and related items.

All three campuses are looking to receive new furniture deliveries on July 16, for move-in dates later in July.

Peete is on schedule.  Structural steel erection is 90% complete. Drywall framing is 75% complete.  Drywall framing, exterior sheathing and sheetrock will continue.  Rough-in of electrical, plumbing, fire sprinkler system and ductwork will continue.  Exterior elements such as brickwork, builtup roofing, metal roofing and plaster framing are underway.
